Housing

91�� Barcelona offers diverse housing options to ensure you’re comfortable in your home away from home. From homestays to shared apartments to residence halls, we strive for your accommodation preferences to be met. Additionally, all housing options are located in neighborhoods with convenient access to public transportation, shops, cafés, and eateries.  

Standard Housing: Includes a single room in a homestay or at residence hall located in Barcelona or the metropolitan area within a 60-minute commute by public transportation to the 91�� Center. Homestays feature a kitchen, living room, and bathroom shared with a host family. Residence Halls boast shared kitchens, common areas, and laundry facilities shared with other students. 

Select Housing: Includes a double room at a shared apartment located in Barcelona within a 35-minute commute by public transportation to the 91�� Center. Apartments boast shared kitchens, common areas, and laundry facilities shared with other students. Select housing requires an additional fee.  

Select Plus Housing: Includes a single room at a residence hall or a shared apartment located in Barcelona within a 35-minute commute by public transportation to the 91�� Center. Residence halls boast shared kitchens, common areas, and laundry facilities shared with other students. Select Plus housing requires an additional fee.   

A note: The default criterion to assign housing is first-come, first-served; however, other factors may also be considered. If we cannot accommodate your first housing choice, we'll let you know before you arrive. Non-standard housing options require an additional fee that can be found in the program Dates and Fees. 

Meals

��ǳ��ٲ��: Students have breakfast and dinner with their host families, and they are responsible for lunch. Students are not typically permitted to use the stovetop/oven at the host family home.

91�� Barcelona: Study near Barcelona’s main square, Plaça Catalunya, on a beautiful pedestrian passageway, only minutes from cafés, restaurants, and important cultural attractions. 91�� Barcelona features classrooms, a student lounge, conference rooms, and charming 19th-century terraces where students can relax outdoors.

Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF): UPF is a highly ranked public university in Barcelona created in 1990 by the Autonomous Government of Catalonia. At UPF, students can take courses with other international students at the Barcelona Program for Interdisciplinary Studies (BaPIS). All courses are usually held at Ciutadella Vila Olímpica Campus.

Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB): UAB is a public university founded in 1968 with an enrollment of more than 40,000 students. UAB is the second-highest ranking Spanish university according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. At UAB, students take courses with other 91�� students from the UAB Study Abroad Program. All courses are usually held at Casa Convalescència Campus.

Arizona State University (ASU): Brought to you by 91�� in partnership with ASU, enhance your international coursework with online classes that align with your degree requirements. ASU offers thousands of online courses in asynchronous 7.5-week sessions that fit within the 91�� academic calendar.

The LC program is composed of 2 tracks, with two different host institutions.

Students will need to choose one track and they can’t combine courses from both host institutions.

In the rare case that a 91�� partner school has enrollments exceeding the UPF maximum per home institution, 91�� will work with any affected students and our partner school to explore alternative tracks and/or programs.

Students are responsible for having their own course approval conversations with their advisors. Your study abroad advisor and 91�� staff can help you understand your course options if you don't see a recommendation that fits your course needs.

Academic Culture

Studying abroad may differ from being on a U.S. campus, as the academic culture in a city implies that students commute daily from their accommodation to the 91�� premises and to the host institution facilities. Commuting is a very important part of life in this European city!   

The course schedule usually runs from Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and students may be enrolled in courses at any time. Although classes are usually not scheduled on Fridays, some courses may have required academic activities on those days.    

Time management is paramount while studying abroad. Courses are academically challenging and involve daily reading, assignments, and compulsory attendance.   

Arizona State University: Most ASU online courses are asynchronous. You may find yourself in classes with students from ASU, other American universities, and students from around the world. You’ll receive direct and individualized support from faculty, 100% online.

Class Format

Courses at 91�� Barcelona are attended by 91�� students exclusively. Typical class sizes for 91�� courses are no more than 30 students in elective courses.  

UPF-BaPIS (Barcelona Program for Interdisciplinary Studies) courses are part of the UPF Study Abroad Program and are only for international students. Courses meet twice a week, and classes are around 30 students per course.  

UPF Spanish language courses are for international students. They typically meet 4 times a week and typical class size is around 15 students per course. 

UAB courses are taught as part of the UAB Study Abroad Program, only for 91�� students. Courses meet twice a week, and classes are around 30 students per course.  

UAB Spanish language courses are taught for international students. They meet 4 times a week, and classes are around 15 students per course. 

ASU online courses meet in “sessions” that are 7.5-weeks long in the semester, and all work must be completed within the session dates regardless of when your other 91�� courses begin or end.

Grading

In 91��, UPF, and UAB courses, students are graded based on class participation, in-class activities, homework assignments, exams, papers, and oral presentations. UPF and UAB professors grade on a 10-point scale, which 91�� converts to recommended U.S. letter grade equivalents. 

ASU grading follows the same format and standards as ASU courses taught in-person. “Pass/fail” or “Audit” is not allowed for 91�� students.
